Since 1988

Guiding the community through outdoor gear exchange for over 30 years.

Greetings From MT.jpg

Secondwind first opened in 1988 based out of an old, offbeat, little house on the north side of Bozeman, Montana, back when Bozeman was still a relatively small cowtown filled with an eclectic mix of climbers, skiers, bikers, boaters, anglers, world class mountaineers, university students, and folks from all walks of life drawn to Montana for the outdoors. As Bozeman grew and expanded, so did Secondwind, and a decade or so later the shop moved a few blocks south to a significantly more expansive storefront just off of historic main street, where they continue to be a central part of the Bozeman community today, working to make the outdoors more affordable and accessible to everyone.

Secondwind ATL opened its doors in spring of 2022. We are locally owned and operated by Atlantan’s passionate about good quality gear, our city, our public lands, and getting outside. We are currently operating out of a converted cargo trailer mobile around the city with plans for a fixed location in the relative near future. We collaborate closely with our parent shop in Montana to expand and adapt their decades long approach to the Southeast.

Come in and check us out, we’ve always got something new and are here to help reduce, reuse, and keep good gear going strong. All are welcome!

Jason - Owner / Operator

Jason, an Atlanta native, moved to Bozeman, Montana in the early 1990’s for undergrad and became a regular of the original Secondwind almost immediately. It’s long been his favorite shop - anywhere - and he still has gear going strong today that he picked up there almost 30 years ago.

While in Bozeman, Jason worked for a leading backpack manufacturer (Dana Design) and spent as much time as possible climbing, biking, skiing and exploring around Montana and the greater Rocky Mountain region. He led field crews for various conservation corps in Montana and the Four Corners region and backpacked a few thousand miles across southern Utah’s Colorado Plateau while working eight days on and six days off for a wilderness therapy program for adjudicated youth. He also spent several seasons as deck boss on a salmon boat in SE Alaska plus nearly three years working in a rural farming community in northeastern El Salvador in the Peace Corps.

After finishing grad school in Missoula, he lived out of a backpack working in various contexts in the humanitarian sector managing state to national food security and livelihood programs in East Africa (while calling southern Germany home) before returning to Atlanta to launch a social enterprise tied into the development sector.

He loves building bikes, riding bikes, days on the river, glamping, and van life with his wife and business partner, Amanda, and their little rescue travel cat, Marlene, who they found a few years back en route to a friend’s wedding in Montana. He also loves photography.

Amanda - Owner / Operator

Originally from the western shores of Lake Michigan, Amanda grew up in Milwaukee exploring the lakes, rivers, and state parks of the upper mid-west with her parents, traveling as a kid in their 70’s era conversion van, camping and canoeing and putting her dad’s own hand built kayaks and paddles to good use. When her family relocated to southern Texas, she fell in love with the hill country there, exploring public lands and rivers all around the region.

Enticed by the arid plains of West Texas, she moved to ranching country for university where she “wrestled” sheep in the name of science. After completing her grad program, she moved back to the Great Lakes region, settling in Saint Paul, MN, where she continued her research trajectory at the University of MN, explored the north shore and upper peninsula, and later transitioned to teaching.

Amanda moved to Atlanta almost a decade ago and has worked as a rockstar STEM teacher at some of the city’s top high schools, teaching AP bio, chemistry, and engineering, as well as coaching cross-country with several state championships under her belt.

Putting her teacher schedule to good use, she’s made the most of her summers each year exploring trails, beaches, and rivers around the country. Closer to home, she loves Atlanta’s in-town historic neighborhoods and checking out many of the local restaurants, parks, and patios the city has to offer. She’s almost always down for a weekend road trip anywhere in the southeast, and her favorite piece of gear is her carbon Felt Decree 27.5 with lots of squish.

Marlene - Shop Cat

Marlene is our occasional resident shop cat and travel buddy. Amanda and Jason found Marlene several summers ago as a seven week kitten next to a diner in rural Missouri called Marlene’s, on day two of a three week road trip to Montana where she immediately took to hiking 11,000 ft peaks, whitewater rafting, hanging out at bars, attending weddings, and sneaking into cheap motels, the lattermost of which is still one of her favorite things to do today.

In addition to head rubs and cheap motel living, Marlene loves glamping, van life, hiking downhill, hunting bugs, shopping, kibbles, and frequenting restaurant patios with her people around Atlanta. She’s been to several dozen states and counting with no plans on slowing down.
